McJimsey Lecture

The Robert D. McJimsey Seminar

The McJimsey Seminar is presented annually in memory of Robert Duncan McJimsey (1936-2009), Professor of History at Colorado College from 1968 to 2007 and beloved warden and vestry member at Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Bob was imaginative and creative. He enjoyed making up games and stories. He especially put his creativity into his teaching, always eager to find new ways to inspire his students' intellectual curiosity. Bob believed in the liberal arts mission of teaching life's lessons and possibilities.

In addition to teaching British and European history, Bob enjoyed teaching interdisciplinary courses with colleagues in the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences.  The seminar, a joint presentation of the church and the college, explores an equally wide range of topics in history, religion, music and science.

It is the spark of intellectual curiosity tempered with humor that we honor each year as we remember our friend and teacher, Bob McJimsey.

The Robert D. McJimsey Seminar 2023
Religion, Race, and Democracy in American History (and Colorado Springs)
Paul Harvey, Distinguished Professor of History & Presidential Teaching Scholar, UCCS
Thurs., Nov. 2, 2023 at 4pm

Paul Harvey is an eminent authority on religion in American society and politics. Among his award-winning works are Through the Storm, through the Night: A History of African American Christianity (2011), The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America (2013), and Martin Luther King: A Religious Biography (2021). As these titles suggest, his work addresses how American Protestantism has been entwined with social movements throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Harvey’s lecture will explore how the country -- and especially the how the Pikes Peak Region -- has been shaped by the interventions of faith-based communities in social justice matters. This lecture will be followed by a sherry-and hors-d’oeuvres reception in the parish hall.
